The #1 song on July 20, 1969
Zager & Evans
One of the most unusual #1 hits in pop history, this dystopian sci-fi epic by Nebraska duo Zager & Evans was originally self-released in 1968 before being picked up by RCA Victor. It shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1969 โ the same week as the Apollo 11 Moon landing โ and stayed there for 6 weeks, part of a 5-week chart journey. Remarkably, it remains the only #1 hit for either artist.
